Tips from a Transfer Pirate

Ahoy there, transfer Pirate!

We ARRRGH so excited that you’re considering climbing aboard our pirate ship and sailing the seas with us to find the treasure that is your ECU degree! My name is Will Lukas, a 2023 transfer student, and I will be your captain today! My hope is that by the time you’re done reading this post, you will feel fully prepared and ready to join the crew here in Pirate Nation!

ECU has so much to offer to all of our students, from state-of-the-art facilities, including our new Main Campus Student Center, to amazing student activities, to thrilling athletic contests. There is bound to be something for every incoming Pirate! My only wish is that I had more time to experience it all! My favorite activities that I’ve experienced in my first year at ECU have been Big Booty Bingo, presented by our Student Activities Board, Homecoming presented by our Student Government Association, Convocation, and Raid the Rec. These events are staples on our campus, and by attending them you’ll become more connected to the university community and meet lifelong friends! You might even decide to join a committee and help organize future campus events.

Speaking of joining committees…East Carolina University offers over 400 student organizations to help enhance your experience as a student. Once you come aboard in the fall, you’ll have the opportunity to attend our annual Get a Clue event. This event is the perfect chance to uncover the unique path that awaits you here in Pirate Nation. I highly recommend it for all new students, but it is especially helpful for transfer students. I attended Get a Clue during my first weeks as a Pirate and I was able to meet leaders from various student organizations and get my foot in the door. As a result of attending Get a Clue, I was able to become involved with the ECU Ambassadors and the Student Activities Board.

Now, I cannot go on much longer without talking about ECU Athletics. I am a big football fan, so the fall is always one of my favorite times! As a student, you’ll have access to a FREE, that’s right, FREE ticket to each and every ECU athletic event! For football games, your student ticket will grant you access to one of the most passionate student sections in all of college sports, the Boneyard. Our 2024 football schedule has already been released and you can check it out here. Also, be sure to check out this video to get a glimpse of what you can expect gameday to look like in the fall. It all sounds pretty exciting right? Just wait until you’re in the Boneyard all decked out in your Pirate gear participating in the Purple & Gold chant! It’s very simple to learn: whenever you hear a fan cheer “Purple!” you respond by cheering “Gold!” right back at them. Learn more and familiarize yourself with all of our gameday cheers and traditions by watching this video with the former “Voice of the Pirates” Jeff Charles.

While college is an exciting time, and we have a ton of fun here at ECU, we also prioritize our academics. ECU places a strong emphasis on student success in the classroom, and we have world-class faculty and staff to help every Pirate unlock their treasure and achieve their full potential. We have several majors to choose from, each with a rigorous and engaging course curriculum. Check out our Degree Explorer to help determine which academic program is best for your future career goals.

I can’t talk about majors for much longer without shouting out the School of Communication, where I am a Communications major on the Interpersonal/Organizational track. Fun fact, I am actually the 3rd and final child in my family to attend ECU in pursuit of a communications degree. I guess you could say we’re loyal Pirates!

ARRRGH you in love with Pirate Nation yet? I sure am, and we’re always searching for new mateys, so I hope you will consider climbing aboard the ship come August. If you’ll be coming aboard, there are a few steps you should complete right away:

  1. If you haven’t already, submit your application here!
  2. Submit your enrollment deposit to secure your spot in the upcoming class
  3. Complete your housing application
  4. Register for or complete new student orientation
