Welcome aboard, opportunities abound!

Ahoy Mateys,

An ECU student hands her resume to a potential employer at a job and internship fair hosted by ECU Career Services.

Captain Will here! So, my crew told me that you’re interested in attending ECU after high school, and I am thrilled to hear that! I wanted to share one of the many ways that ECU helps to support the professional career development of our current and future students — student employment. On-campus jobs are a fantastic way to build your network, gain work experience, and stay active on campus. Not to mention the flexible schedules, growth opportunities, and bi-weekly pay!

Did you know that there are student employment opportunities available in just about every career field? Are you a huge Pirate sports fan who is interested in a future career in athletics? You may consider joining our Athletics department as an operations assistant, hydration specialist, or Pirate video crew member. If athletics is not your jam, no worries! Perhaps you’ll enjoy working with ECU Transit, where you’ll help thousands of your fellow Pirates get around campus safely. ECU Transit also provides a generous paid CDL program to all employees. Additionally, you could find opportunities within your major, such as a research assistant position.

On-campus employment is the premiere option for students looking for part-time work. Take it from me, I have been working on campus for over a year in various departments. Each of these roles has been vital in supporting my personal and professional development. Were you aware that, according to the National Association of Colleges and Employers, employers typically look for 10 common skills in applicants? Well, it’s true, and every student employment opportunity at ECU checks all the boxes! These skills are:

  • Effective Communication
  • Accountability/Integrity
  • Professionalism
  • Initiative
  • Problem Solving/Effective Reasoning
  • Conflict Resolution
  • Organization/Planning
  • Mentorship
  • Teamwork
  • Adaptability/Resiliency • Self-Awareness

So, working at ECU as a student will help you land a full-time job offer after graduation! According to the US News and World Report, “if you’re working during college, you’re gaining important work skills that will be valued by future employers. You know about showing up on time, following directions given by a supervisor, and being generally diligent in your duties.”

Student success is a core value of East Carolina University and is at the heart of everything we do as an organization. Student employment is a big piece of our success! Just take it from Max Lukas, a 2024 graduate of ECU with a degree in communications and a minor in sports studies. Max worked as the student manager for the women’s lacrosse team for four years, helping to coordinate team operations, including: filming practices and games, recruiting, meals, and team travel. Immediately after graduation, Max was offered a full-time position as the director of lacrosse operations. Max also served as a resident advisor with ECU Campus Living for three years during his undergraduate years.

“Student employment provided me the opportunity to gain valuable work experience in my field while also strengthening my connections and network. I would attribute much of my success to the opportunities I had to work at ECU while an undergraduate student.” Max said.

Student employees must be enrolled at ECU, have a minimum GPA of 2.0, and can work up to 40 hours per week.
